What’s An Ally?

Individuals motivated to leave poverty wil attend an 18-session course using the “Getting Ahead in a Just Gettin’ By World” curriculum through which they will evaluate their lives, learn unwritten cultural rules regarding employment and community engagement, and begin to develop resources to survive and flourish in society. After the training, the participants will ideally be matched with allies (volunteers from the community) who will encourage them as they transition out of poverty.

Data from Bridges communities have shown that after graduating, Getting Ahead participants report an increase in income, furthering education, finding stable housing, managing finances, becoming better parents, building social capital and realizing their dreams instead of being overwhelmed by hopelessness. Allies report that they find meaning and fulfillment in assisting in the work of individual and community transformation.

We believe this initiative will help bring community support and resources to people who are on their journey out of poverty. As an ally, you will befriend someone who is highly motivated to increase their resources and build a better life. Allies help in the area of budgeting, educational training, friendship, better health, and overall wellness. An ally can be anyone who genuinely wants to help and believes everyone has the potential for stability and self-sufficiency.

What’s the Time Commitment?

After a short training and being matched to a recent graduate from our Getting Ahead Class, we ask our Allies to commit for a minimum of 18 months for 2-4 hours per month, which includes: monthly or bi-monthly meeting with the graduate at a mutually convenient time. Phone and in-person contact is encouraged on an as needed basis throughout the month.

Allies are also strongly encouraged to attend the monthly Staying Ahead meetings.
